ABC Course Design Workshop

STTAIRS partners took part in a training session on the ABC Course Design method, delivered by the SRCE team as part of the project’s capacity-building activities.

The workshop introduced partners to the ABC Learning Design method, a practical and collaborative approach to course design. It supports teaching teams in reviewing or designing modules through a structured process based on learning outcomes, learning activities, assessment and blended learning formats. The approach is particularly useful for new programmes or for courses being adapted to online or blended delivery.

The session provided partners with a structured introduction to the five core components of the ABC method, each contributing to a coherent and outcomes-driven approach to course design.

Key components of the ABC method

Course Summary and ECTS

Definition of a concise course description and allocation of ECTS points as the starting point for structured course design.

Learning Outcomes

Formulation of clear, measurable learning outcomes that drive the design of activities, resources and assessment tasks.

Six Learning Types

Application of Diana Laurillard’s Conversational Framework through six learning types to map, analyse and enrich the learning journey.

Learning Blend Overview

Visualisation of how learning types are distributed across a course and how face-to-face and online components are balanced within a blended format.

Storyboard and Action Planning

Use of a storyboard sheet to organise learning types and activities, align assessment with the learning process and define next steps in course development.

This training reflects the collaborative spirit of STTAIRS. With a shared methodological framework now in place, all partners are better positioned to contribute to the design of training pathways that are pedagogically coherent, outcomes-driven and ready for AI-enhanced delivery.
